The Lawrence Coalition for Safe Streets, in partnership with the Lawrence Public Library, will host a screening of the documentary Changing Lanes on August 30, 2026, at 3:00 PM at the Lawrence Public Library Auditorium.

Changing Lanes, directed by Ben Wolf, follows a Greenpoint, Brooklyn community's fight to redesign McGuinness Boulevard into a safer, two-lane street with protected bike lanes after a beloved teacher was killed in a hit-and-run crash. The film explores where culture meets civic life, examining why streets are designed the way they are and what it will take to make them safer and more livable. It features interviews with Talking Heads frontman David Byrne and former NYC Department of Transportation Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan.

Following the screening, the Coalition will host a panel discussion featuring:

• Ben Wolf, director of Changing Lanes (virtual)

• Kevin LaCherra, Brooklyn organizer with Make McGuinness Safe (virtual)

• Eric Rogers and Nolan Oehrke, Executive Director and Director of Education with BikeWalkKC (in person)

• Holly Terrill, Executive Director of Bike Walk Wichita (in person)

• Michael Kelley, Policy Director at Missourians for Responsible Transportation (in person)

The panel will explore how grassroots advocacy shapes street design decisions, and what lessons Kansas and Missouri communities can draw from Greenpoint's and other Midwestern cities' efforts to build safer streets for pedestrians and cyclists.
